How to Find Your Target Audience and Create Content Just for Them

Do you want your content marketing to be effective? Then you have to know who your target audience is. Identifying your ideal target audience is critical for any sort of content marketing success. How unfortunate would it be to spend all the necessary time to create a great content campaign only to have it reach the wrong people? That’s why you need to know to whom you are marketing.

Once upon a time, marketers used the principle of “build it, and they will come” when it came to content marketing. Some still think that way and it’s partially true. Good content will pull people to your blog and company but who are these people that are coming? Are they likely to engage with your company and purchase your products? Or are they just another random visitor that happened upon your site?

For the most effective content marketing, you want to make sure that you are creating content that appeals directly to your target audience. Now, that’s easy to say but harder to put into practice. Do you know who your target audience is? If not, then use these strategies to help you figure that out.

Who is Your Product For?

One of the first things you need to do to determine your target audience is understand your product. What does your product do and what need does it fill? Are you a company that creates organizational software or do you run an agency designed to fill marketing needs?

After you’ve determined what your product does and what needs it fills, then you need to determine who is most likely to buy your product. Is it the suburban mom with 3 kids or the CEO of a large banking corporation? Once you have a good idea of who is most likely to purchase your product, then you can move on the next step.

Know Everything About Your Audience

If you want to create content that really appeals to your audience, then you need to understand every detail about their life. This includes age, demographics, psychographics, income, family life, daily challenges, and daily accomplishments etc. Basically, you want to learn everything about your audience that you can.

Once you have this information, you want to create what is called an audience persona. An audience persona is a useful tool because it gives you the chance to visualize your audience as you create content. When you can picture your audience, it’s easier to create content that fits them exactly. Your readers will feel like you are talking directly to them.

Use Social Media

Social media is a gold mine when it comes to learning about your target audience. Facebook and Twitter both have excellent tools available that are designed to help you learn more about your followers. These tools can show you insights such as the gender of your followers, their likes, dislikes, interests, and many other things. When you have these insights, creating appealing content is much easier.

Find Your Target Audience

Content marketing is a fantastic way to reach out to your customers but it won’t do you any good if you are reaching out to the wrong people. Understanding your target audience is an absolutely critical component if you want any of your marketing efforts to be successful, especially content marketing. Take the time to understand whom your product is for, learn everything you can about your audience, and glean insights from social media. Doing so will help you know how to appeal better to your audience and create content specifically for them.
