It never hurts to get a little inspiration when becoming an online entrepreneur. At times, starting a company online when there are already so many successful businesses seems near impossible. But looking at what others have done may help you to see that the road may be rocky, but you’re on the path to a destination better than you had hoped for. Since these entrepreneurs have been in your shoes, they also have the best advice and tools to help you when you do hit speed bumps.
Here are 3 entrepreneurs we’ve picked out who have some of the best advice from their success in online business:
When he lost his job as an architect, Pat Flynn needed another way to make income fast for his new family. Looking at what he had available, he saw that he was getting a lot of views on the website he created to help him study for the LEED exam, a test for architects. Flynn decided to create an ebook that people could buy to study for the LEED exam. It’s a practice called “passive income,” setting up a way to earn money without having to work all the time. This example of passive income, creating and providing a service online that on its own generated money, led Flynn to make over $7,000 in Ebook sales in his first month as an online entrepreneur.
Flynn has gone on to create similar sites that provide valuable tips and services from training security guards to food truckers, all of which continue to bring in revenue. His main focus has been on educating young entrepreneurs about passive income, through his popular podcasts, blog, and website. What he emphasizes is that creating a platform for passive income takes work. He says to not expect “passive” to mean you don’t have to lift a finger. Flynn’s philosophy is to “work hard now to continually reap the benefits later.”
Despite his great success, Flynn acknowledges time and time again, that he doesn’t know everything, he just keeps trying and experimenting. He says that “You don’t actually have to be an expert, you just have to know more than the people who are looking for that information,” which he continues to do.
He also always remembers what is important. Flynn repeatedly says on his site and podcast that he loves what he does because it gives him time to be with his family. He wants listeners to his podcast to speak up if they see him changing, because he doesn’t want money to make him a man he doesn’t want to be.
After working in marketing for a few years after college, Amy Porterfield remembered something her dad told her years ago: to become her own boss one day. While her previous jobs had trained her on the in’s and out’s of small to large-scale marketing campaigns, Porterfield felt that her ideas were often lost. She also realized that at some point, if she could no longer progress higher up in her profession; she would be stuck. Plus, she was losing time away from her family. It was time for a change.
Using a tactic that her boss at the time had taught her, Porterfield burned her boats, or gave herself no chance to turn back. She left behind the agency she was working at to create her own marketing agency, this time online. It was the frontier she was looking for, one she felt was headed to success.
And it was. Porterfield has since become a Social Media Marketing guru, co-writing Facebook Marketing All-In-One for Dummies, creating training programs for entrepreneurs and their social media strategists, and keeping up with blog and video posts on her website and Facebook page.
Porterfield founded her own marketing agency, helping many other companies find success using the best marketing strategies out there. She not only teaches how to be the ultimate marketer on social media, she IS the ultimate marketer. Porterfield’s goal for her clients and fellow potential marketers is to help them have “more traffic, more leads and more sales—for less stress and zero drama.”
Another person with incredible advice, Michael Hyatt found success in his online training company after success in the corporate publishing world, making his way up to CEO of Thomas Nelson Publishers. For years, Hyatt worked in the publishing business, a platform which eventually would lead him to be New York Times best-selling author and co-author of many well-received books, including ones such as Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want.
He now focuses primarily on his online training business by continuing to write blogs, create podcasts (seeing a pattern, here?), and speak at various conferences. Hyatt’s goal is to be what he and others call a “virtual mentor,” to help you succeed in your professional and personal spheres. His hopes for “mentees” who are high achievers, those who want to do something more with their life.
For someone who has achieved greatness himself, Hyatt knows how to help those who want to be great and do great themselves. He also understands how easy it is to feel overwhelmed with all that you have to do. For concerns such as this, Hyatt teaches that “the answer isn’t simply to get more done. The answer is to get the right things done.” His writings and podcasts give more direction and in-depth guidance, such as this, to help high-achievers make it where they want to go.
