When he lost his job as an architect, Pat Flynn needed another way to make income fast for his new family. Looking at what he had available, he saw that he was getting a lot of views on the website he created to help him study for the LEED exam, a test for architects. Flynn decided to create an ebook that people could buy to study for the LEED exam. It’s a practice called “passive income,” setting up a way to earn money without having to work all the time. This example of passive income, creating and providing a service online that on its own generated money, led Flynn to make over $7,000 in Ebook sales in his first month as an online entrepreneur.
Flynn has gone on to create similar sites that provide valuable tips and services from training security guards to food truckers, all of which continue to bring in revenue. His main focus has been on educating young entrepreneurs about passive income, through his popular podcasts, blog, and website. What he emphasizes is that creating a platform for passive income takes work. He says to not expect “passive” to mean you don’t have to lift a finger. Flynn’s philosophy is to “work hard now to continually reap the benefits later.”
Despite his great success, Flynn acknowledges time and time again, that he doesn’t know everything, he just keeps trying and experimenting. He says that “You don’t actually have to be an expert, you just have to know more than the people who are looking for that information,” which he continues to do.
He also always remembers what is important. Flynn repeatedly says on his site and podcast that he loves what he does because it gives him time to be with his family. He wants listeners to his podcast to speak up if they see him changing, because he doesn’t want money to make him a man he doesn’t want to be.
After working in marketing for a few years after college, Amy Porterfield remembered something her dad told her years ago: to become her own boss one day. While her previous jobs had trained her on the in’s and out’s of small to large-scale marketing campaigns, Porterfield felt that her ideas were often lost.
